My teaching style

I believe in the power of play. My studies in music education have shown that games are a highly effective way to learn the fundamentals of music and reinforce all kinds of musical concepts, so they are a crucial component in my teaching. My lessons take a well rounded approach by including theory, repertoire, sight-reading, composition, improvisation, and technique. Students are encouraged to discover what they like best and create goals for themselves. The result is playful, creative students who are able to follow their passions while also being encouraged to step outside their comfort zone.

“Emily has been great in working with our 7 year old. We had no piano experience and she came in and created a fun environment for us and my daughter is learning quickly. I would definitely recommend Emily!”

FAQs

What instruments do you teach?

I teach piano, trumpet, and trombone. Sometimes I also teach beginner guitar, ukulele, and singing by request.

How much should my child practice?

There is no specific practice requirement, but a great goal to start is 10-20 minutes a day, five days a week. Consistency is key, so practicing more frequently is often more beneficial than longer sessions. To help your child establish a practice routine, consider integrating it into their daily schedule, like after breakfast or before brushing their teeth. It’s important to note that a student who requires support with their homework routine will likely need support with a practice routine as well.

What kind of piano/keyboard do I need?

For acoustic pianos, any in-tune piano with functioning pedals will suffice. If your child is small, you may need to adjust the seat’s height using books or cushions, or opt for an adjustable piano bench. If using a keyboard, ensure it has 88 weighted keys and is set up at a height where your child’s arms are parallel to the floor.

What if I need to miss a lesson?

If you need to miss a lesson, please inform me as soon as possible. While I can’t change your lesson time, I can provide a new assignment for the week and demonstrate concepts via video. Missed lessons are anticipated and factored into the monthly tuition.

Will my child enjoy piano lessons?

Piano lessons with Mrs. Songster are a delightful and enriching experience for kids, and here’s why:

  • Engaging Games: Children love games, and I use them to introduce and reinforce various musical concepts. They eagerly embrace challenges when presented as part of a game and often request these activities repeatedly to master them.
  • Creative Expression: Beyond playing music expressively, students explore improvisation and composition right from the start, allowing them to express themselves in unique and personal ways.
  • Low Pressure Environment: Your child will always be greeted with a warm smile, whether they’ve practiced or not, whether they make mistakes or play flawlessly. I meet each student at their current skill level and work from there.
  • Boosted Self-Esteem: Learning to play the piano isn’t effortless, but it’s incredibly rewarding. With each week of lessons, students acquire skills that stay with them for life, fostering a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem that’s truly invaluable.
